Anyone planning journeys in Lincolnshire over the coming days should be prepared for potential delays as a result of the thousands of visitors that will be descending upon this year's Burghley Horse Trials.

With upwards of 140,000 attendees expected in 2014, the Highways Agency has recommended motorists be prepared for congestion in and around the Burghley Park site from September 4th to 7th, when the annual equestrian event will be taking place.

A temporary 50 mph speed limit is to be in force for the A1 northbound and southbound exit slip roads leading to the B1081 Old Great North Road for the duration of the Trials, while a range of traffic management schemes are being put in place for surrounding routes in order to streamline traffic flows to and from the venue.

Highways Agency representative for routine maintenance delivery Andy Shilliday stated: "The temporary mandatory speed restriction, slip road closures and diversion routes will be clearly signposted throughout the event.

"We expect traffic to be busier in the area throughout the weekend and we strongly advise road users in the area to plan ahead and allow extra journey time in case of any delays."

Volume of traffic has been predicted to be a problem for travellers in the area over the coming days and therefore all road users should remember to plan their journeys in advance and avoid these routes if possible.

All traffic management in the area is scheduled to end at 21:00 BST on Sunday (September 7th), but until then, drivers should also keep abreast of the latest traffic conditions via local radio updates, as well as by visiting the Highways Agency website.

Routes that are most likely to be affected by increased levels of congestion include the A1 and nearby motorways.
