Mazda has announced it is set to unveil its 25th anniversary edition of its popular MX-5 model at this year's New York International Auto Show.

More than 940,000 MX-5 models have been sold over the vehicle's 25-year history and it has proven to be one of the manufacturer's most accessible and popular models in recent years. Indeed, the vehicle continues to hold the Guinness world record as the best-selling two-seater sports car in the world.

Mazda's chairman of the board Takashi Yamanouch commented: "The original concept behind the MX-5 was so simple; to offer the pure joy of a lightweight sportscar that moves precisely as the driver intends.

"While responding to increasing safety and environmental requirements, over the 25 years since its launch we have had to continually reinvent the MX-5 – far beyond simple evolution – in order to stay true to that original ideal."

He added the history of the MX-5 means the firm has had to focus on innovation to remain true to the original ethos of the design, incorporating a process of "changing everything, to stay the same".

The new MX-5 will be unveiled at the international automotive event this week and has been developed to continue to provide excellent performance for buyers, while at the same time delivering improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions.

Mazda has incorporated its groundbreaking Skyactiv technology into the new incarnation of the vehicle and has also seen its overall weight reduced by 100kg, while the bodywork has also been made more rigid to improve handling.

Running from April 18th to 27th, the New York International Auto Show promises to be a feast for the senses for car lovers and will see the launch of many new models and designs by some of the biggest names in the automotive profession.

Mazda is sure to be among the standout performers at this year's event, with the 25th anniversary MX-5 taking pride of place on the marque's stand.
