26 January, 10 Shell fuel card customers have been advised that the company's renewal of its oil leases in Nigeria is likely to be stalled. President of Nigeria Umaru Yar'Adua has been in hospital in Saudi Arabia for more than two months suffering from a heart condition, which has led analysts to claim that negotiations between oil majors and the country's government are unlikely to progress. Unnamed industry experts told AFP that the president's continued absence will do little to encourage the likes of Shell and Chevron to extend their deals in the African nation. "International oil companies can take technical risks but hate commercial risks," one expert told the news agency. "There will be no investment. "The industry is totally aligned on this particular issue." This news comes despite Nigeria's junior oil minister Odein Ajumogobia assuring the news provider that talks are still ongoing. "Chevron and Shell are still in negotiations with the federal government," he said last week. Find out more about the Shell fuel card and start saving now Posted by James Richmond
