Business diesel cards news: FTA slams government over fuel duty hikes

17 February, 10
The government has itself to blame for the increase in inflation because it was responsible for the hike in duty affecting motorists with business diesel cards.

This is the view of the Freight Transport Association (FTA), which pointed out that a successive series of duty rises had contributed to the price of diesel and petrol rising faster than the rate of inflation.

In its monthly consumer prices index report (CPI), the Office for National Statistics highlighted the transport sector as the biggest upward driver on the UK's cost of living.

As a result of a record 2.2 per cent increase in fuel prices between December 2009 and January 2010, the CPI rose by 3.5 per cent.

Jo Tanner, director of communications for the FTA, slammed Whitehall officials for their failure to help motorists and hauliers, including those with business diesel cards.

"It is anathema … to increase the tax imposed on the cost of a tank of diesel during a recession, especially when the actual price of a barrel of oil has doubled," she said.
