BP account card news: BP to invest in North Sea

04 March, 10
Oil jobs in Scotland could be protected following BP's announcement that it will invest £1 billion a year in the North Sea oil industry.

BP has said it will invest in the area in a bid to produce at least 300,000 barrels a day, every year until at least 2020.

The company's strategy, announced at its annual presentation in London, will include the growth of four developments in the waters off Scotland. This will include a £4 billion expansion of the Clair field near Shetland.

The news is likely to be welcomed by the company's 3,000 North Sea employees, as well as by north-east service firms.

Cosalt Offshore provides services for the oil and gas industry. Chief executive Calum Melville told the Press and Journal: "The announcement by BP is really positive news and shows ... there is still a great future in the North Sea and there are many opportunities out there for the service sector."
