BP has come out top in a ranking of the environmental, sustainability and social impacts management undertaken by major oil and gas companies.
The rating, by Tomorrow's Value, ranked BP top with a score of 59 per cent, closely followed by Shell with 55 per cent. The score of both of these companies was increased by the fact they both use an independent third party to examine their sustainability reports.
The research for the ranking found that most major oil and gas companies recognise the issues that need addressing, such as climate change, health and safety and community development. It also showed that companies were getting better at disclosing fines and legal actions against them.
Despite this, Tomorrow's Value found that few companies had implemented solutions which matched stakeholders' expectations.
Todd Cort, who led the research, said: "The overall message is one of opportunity. The top performers could all emerge as a sector leader and perhaps global leader once again."
