Chevron has announced that it has begun work on an ultra-deepwater drillship called the Discoverer Inspiration.
The drillship in the Gulf of Mexico is able to drill wells in 12,000 feet of water. It is the second to be deployed by Chevron in the last six months, following Discoverer Clear Leader commencing operations last August.
George Kirkland, vice-chairman of Chevron, said: "Going beyond the limits of previous technology, Inspiration and Clear Leader provide Chevron with the most advanced offshore drilling capabilities as we explore for new sources of energy in the US and globally."
After exploring prospects in the Gulf of Mexico, the drillship will develop projects in St Malo, Buckskin and Jack. This will allow the oil company to determine how easily the oil will flow in the reserves, which could potentially be large developments.
Chevron holds the record for deepwater drilling, a depth of 10,001 feet. The company has said that Discoverer Inspiration is expected to reduce the cost of drilling by five to 15 per cent over traditional rigs.
