01 April, 10 Prices at British petrol pumps could hit new highs over the Easter weekend as the latest increase in fuel duty takes effect. According to research firm Experian Catalist, the average price of unleaded was around 118p before the 1p rise in petrol levies came into force today (1st April), with diesel at 118.51p. The AA's Andrew Howard told the BBC it was as yet uncertain where the cost of fuel would go in the near future, saying: "It depends on how the pound reacts to the general election result and the impact of any tax changes that follow the election." It had been suggested that fuel duty would rise by 3p, but this increase will now be introduced in three stages between this month and next January. July 2008's record petrol average of 119.7p still stands, though for how much longer is unclear. In March, the AA claimed fuel fees had risen by 4p per litre over the course of the previous month.
