21 June, 10 Conservative chancellor George Osborne will not introduce cuts in fuel duty in his emergency Budget tomorrow (June 22nd), according to a report. An article on the This is Money website claims both the Conservative pledge to introduce a fuel duty regulator and the Liberal Democrat promise to slash fuel levies in rural areas have been dropped by the coalition. The site alleges small pilot initiatives will be established to consider new ways to reduce costs, but the announcement is likely to come as a disappointment to many motorists who had hoped the new government would be more driver-friendly than its Labour predecessor. After his appointment in May, Tory transport minister Philip Hammond told the Daily Mail the previous administration's "war on motorists" had come to an end and sought to assure voters he would seek to "sweat the assets" to maximise income. He also claimed a consultation on the fuel duty regulator would follow in due course, but no further confirmation has followed since.
