22 June, 10 Britain's Conservative chancellor George Osborne has been urged to cut fuel duty for struggling rural drivers by Scottish finance secretary John Swinney. In a letter to Mr Osborne ahead of his emergency Budget today (June 22nd), the North Tayside MSP said the Scottish executive has so far been "encouraged" by the level of engagement with Westminster, but suggested more needs to be done. Mr Swinney specifically proposed cutting fuel taxes in remote communities, adding: "Tuesday's Budget is a real opportunity to embed the much-heralded respect agenda of the new UK government. The chancellor can bring real benefits to Scotland." However, he also commented that "substantial differences" remain between Holyrood and the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition and suggested the removal of economic stimulus measures could have a disproportionate effect on Scotland. Last week, Mr Swinney's SNP colleague Stewart Hosie, the Scottish Treasury spokesman, warned the government to act on election pledges to reconsider current fuel taxation.
