Fuel card news: SNP condemns 'highway robbery' on fuel duty

24 June, 10
SNP transport spokesman Angus MacNeil has issued strong criticism of Conservative chancellor George Osborne's failure to scrap the imminent fuel duty increases scheduled for October and January.

Responding to this week's emergency Budget, he pointed out that drivers in Scotland's rural communities are paying more to fill up than motorists anywhere else in the UK and urged the coalition government to establish a pilot scheme in the Western Isles.

"We need action on fuel prices immediately not more Treasury consultations and delays," the politician explained. "We had that with Labour and it appears we are getting it again from the Tory-Lib Dem pact."

Mr MacNeil claimed that similar schemes operate successfully in other countries and said he has already put his suggestion to the Treasury's chief secretary.

Earlier this week, Scottish finance secretary John Swinney also called for fuel taxes to be lowered in rural areas and hinted at some frustration at the existing "constitutional arrangements".
