Fuel card news: UK diesel 'most expensive in Europe'

25 June, 10
Recent increases in fuel duty have made diesel more expensive in Britain than anywhere else in Europe, a report has claimed.

According to official figures cited in the Press and Journal, the fuel currently averages 122.8p a litre on British forecourts, comfortably ahead of crisis-hit Greece, where motorists pay 118.9p despite the recent sovereign debt worries.

SNP transport spokesman Angus MacNeil described the rocketing cost of diesel as a "disgrace", adding: "There was no relief in the Budget, but the Treasury must act because soaring fuel prices are actually hindering economic recovery from recession."

He directed fierce criticism at junior coalition partners the Liberal Democrats, claiming the party had been "shouting from the rooftops" about reducing fuel taxation during the election campaign, but has so far failed to act on its earlier pledges.

Earlier this week, Conservative chancellor George Osborne announced in his emergency Budget that fuel duty hikes scheduled for October and January will remain in place.
