30 June, 10 Preliminary drilling at a recently-discovered oilfield in the North Sea has proved encouraging and could provide a significant quantity of the commodity, according to exploration firm Encore Oil. As much as 300 million barrels of oil could be contained within the Catcher field, situated off the eastern coast of Scotland, which would make it the largest discovery in the region since the Buzzard field eight years ago. "Block 28/9 could possibly contain a series of discoveries that would form one of the larger North Sea oil accumulations of recent years," Encore chief executive Alan Booth explained in a statement. The company claims the oil is of "excellent quality" and Premier Oil boss Simon Lockett, whose business has a 35 per cent stake in the Catcher venture, said he hopes rapid progress will be made in developing the oilfield. Last month, Rockhopper Petroleum announced it had struck oil off the coast of the disputed Falkland Islands, sparking increased fears over diplomatic relations between London and Buenos Aires.
