Fuel card news: Lib Dem minister under renewed fuel duty pressure

06 July, 10
Danny Alexander, the Liberal Democrat chief Treasury secretary, has come under fire from struggling motorists in rural Scotland who claim current fuel taxation is threatening businesses and livelihoods.

According to the Press and Journal, SNP transport spokesman Angus MacNeil has taken up the cause of drivers in the Highlands and Islands and suggested that any attempts to obfuscate the issue could provoke a backlash from voters.

"Ministers must make good on that promise [to reduce fuel duty] by ensuring the schemes are in place before the VAT rise kicks in," he said. "Tactics of delay and kicking the subject into the long grass would be unacceptable."

During the election campaign, Mr Alexander called for some form of fuel tax regulation in rural communities and later claimed to have struck a deal with Conservative chancellor George Osborne to reconsider current levies.

In last month's emergency Budget, Mr Osborne made no mention of the much-publicised fuel tax stabiliser.
