20 July, 10 Business fuel card users are unlikely to significantly increase the size of their fleets this year. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the number of truck registrations between January and June 2010 was 16 per cent down on the first half of the previous year. As a result, Iveco believes that the number for 2010 as a whole will be lower than the amount recorded in 2009. Nigel Emms, director for brand and communications at Iveco commented: "Last year, total truck sales amounted to 35,000 units and we're forecasting it to be around the 32,000 mark by year-end." Speaking to Road Transport, he added that while order intake is very strong at the moment, it is unlikely to boost sales of trucks by a significant margin. This comes as haulage companies face a number of financial pressures. In his emergency Budget last month, chancellor of the exchequer George Osborne signalled his intention to press on with controversial fuel tax rises in October and early next year.
