21 July, 10 Business fuel card users may be affected by plans to apply the European Working Time Directive (EWTD) to professional drivers. The European Parliament is currently considering plans to make self-employed road users subject to the regulation, which already applies to jobs such as junior doctors. However, Liberal Democrat MEP George Lyon believes another layer of bureaucracy would be added to the road haulage sector if it is included in the EWTD. In addition, he stated that such a move would increase costs in the industry at a time when fuel prices are already "excessive". "There is not a shred of evidence to suggest that limiting working hours improves road safety," Mr Lyon commented. He added that capping the working week at 48 hours would be harmful as the sector is still trying to recover from the recent recession. This comes after the Press and Journal stated that rural businesses are increasingly struggling under the weight of fuel prices and need urgent government assistance.
