22 July, 10 Self-employed lorry drivers may soon be seeking fuel cards to offset the costs of a European Union policy. The European Parliament has narrowly voted against excluding such workers from the Working Time Directive after an exemption for them was proposed by the European Commission. George Lyon, a Scottish MEP, told the Scotsman he was disappointed at the parliament's decision, claiming that it was driven by "ideology and not common sense". "It will add another layer of bureaucracy and cost to the road haulage industry," he stated, explaining he believes there is little evidence that road safety is improved by the legislation. Last month, the problems hauliers are facing because of rising fuel costs were outlined by Lyall Cresswell, managing director of the Transport Exchange Group. In comments that may further encourage those in the industry to purchase fuel cards, the expert stated that "sky high" prices are eating into the profits of haulage companies.
