Diesel fuel card news: Warning given on illegal fuel usage penalties

23 July, 10
Users of diesel fuel cards have been advised that HM Revenue and Customs is continuing its crackdown on businesses which sell or use fuel illegally.

New penalties were introduced at the start of April 2010 in an attempt to discourage those not paying the correct excise duty on oil products such as diesel, reports Farmers Weekly Interactive.

"Anyone running a business selling goods that have excise duty on them can be penalised if an employee or adviser commits what is referred to as a wrongdoing," the website explained, pointing out that one misdemeanour could be using diesel purchased for company use in personal cars.

It explained that penalties now range from ten per cent of the possible lost revenue to up to 100 per cent, depending on the level of intent.

Earlier this week, the AA revealed that the average price of a litre of diesel now stands at 119.9p, a rise of 15.8p on last July's figures.
