Business fuel card news: Companies 'reviewing their car policies'

23 July, 10
Companies may be considering purchasing business fuel cards as they review their car policies.

According to David Wreford, principal in HR consultancy Mercer's human capital division, many organisations across the world have provided company cars to their employees over the years.

He told HR Magazine that this benefit has been popular because it gives employees mobility, as well as having some tax advantages.

"However, as a result of the economic downturn, multinational organisations have been reassessing their car policies along with other benefits as they continue to struggle to manage costs," Mr Wreford explained.

Earlier this month, comments by Conservative MP Tim Yeo may have encouraged more companies to think about getting business fuel cards.

He suggested that motorways should be privatised, with drivers charged for their emissions output, as well as for travelling during peak times.

The politician suggested the move would help cut congestion and promote greener vehicle choices.
