28 July, 10 Liberal Democrat MP Danny Alexander has claimed the coalition government is taking steps towards a pilot scheme which could see fuel duty reduced in some of the UK's most remote rural areas. Speaking to the Press and Journal, Mr Alexander admitted that the initiative may not come into effect before the impending increase in VAT in January, but insisted it remains a key priority for the Conservative-Lib Dem administration. "We are working hard within the Treasury to find a way to deliver what I think is essential," he explained. "I feel optimistic that over the next few months we will have some proposals to put forward." Mr Alexander acknowledged that overcoming EU regulations may prove challenging and declined to set a timetable for the trial, but added that there is a "very strong case" for a fuel tax reduction. Last month, chancellor George Osborne revealed in his Budget that increases in the levy will be introduced in October and January as scheduled.
