02 August, 10 Britain's coalition government is continuing to investigate potential methods of reducing the fuel duty burden on struggling rural motorists and could introduce pilot schemes within months, it has been suggested. According to the John O'Groat Journal, economic secretary to the Treasury Justine Greening suggested in a recent letter that the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance could seek to assist small businesses by adjusting fuel tax. "Reflecting our commitment to investigate measures to help with fuel costs in remote, rural areas, the government is considering the case for introducing a fuel duty discount in remote, rural areas," she explained. Ms Greene added that under current plans inherited from the previous administration, the government is committed to increasing fuel duty by an annual one per cent per litre until April 2014. Last week, a survey carried out by Bibby Financial Services found that output in the UK's transport and storage sector could be further hampered by the impending hikes in fuel tax and VAT.
