03 August, 10 Output at an onshore oil field in Sussex's South Downs is set to rise by almost double its current amount in the coming years, according to bosses at the plant. The Daily Mail reported that production at the Singleton facility, near Chichester, could climb to as many as 2,100 barrels per day, leading to the installation of more of the distinctive so-called "nodding donkey" pumps at the centre. "It was the steal of the century. We bought it for £12 million [three years ago] and the analysts will tell you it is now an £80 million asset," said Tony O'Reilly Jr, the son of Singleton's owner. "We aim to double production in two years." Although inland sites currently account for just two per cent of the UK's overall oil production, estimates have suggested that there could be up to nine million barrels of the commodity currently located beneath the south-east of England. In April, an Australian energy firm claimed it had discovered large reserves in areas of Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight.
