04 August, 10 Government plans to trial a fuel duty regulation scheme are still some time away from coming to fruition, according to Treasury chief secretary Danny Alexander. According to the Shetland News, Mr Alexander acknowledged that there is a "very strong case" for adjusting fuel tax to help reduce some of the burden faced by motorists living in remote rural areas, but urged patience. "I feel optimistic that over the next few months we will have some proposals to put forward," he explained. "There are still significant hurdles to be cleared, including at European level. I am not in a position to make a pledge on the precise timing." The Liberal Democrat MP claimed he views a reduction in countryside fuel duty as "essential" and accepted that many drivers and businesses living outside of Britain's major urban centres are faced with steep petrol and diesel prices. Last month, SNP transport spokesman Angus MacNeil called on the coalition to cut rural fuel tax before the impending hike in VAT takes effect next year.
