05 August, 10 Law-abiding demonstrations against sky-high fuel prices can bring about real change for British drivers, according to a Conservative Welsh assembly member and former protest leader. Speaking to the Western Mail, Brynle Williams discussed his role in the nationwide dispute over the cost of fuel ten years ago and revealed that although the then-Labour government was forced to negotiate, diesel fees still harm his farming business. "We must never stop the individual’s right to peaceful - and let me emphasise peaceful - protest," he told the newspaper. "And what the fuel strikes showed was that peaceful protests will work." Mr Williams revealed that the success of the protests in 2000 had exceeded organisers' expectations and suggested direct action had played a crucial role in forcing Tony Blair's administration to reverse its policy.
