Fuel card news: Diesel car sales 'overtake petrol models'

06 August, 10
British sales of diesel-powered cars have outstripped those of petrol vehicles for the first time since the second world war, according to new figures compiled by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

Worries over the rocketing price of petrol and the ongoing after-effects of the global economic downturn are believed to be the main factors behind the sudden shift, with modern diesel engines up to 20 per cent more fuel efficient than petrol motors.

"Although some of the increase in diesel sales will be down to companies restocking fleets after the economic downturn, many will be from drivers who are fed up with petrol costs," AA president Edmund King told the Telegraph.

He pointed out that the average price of petrol remains just 5p below its peak earlier in the year and 3p down on 2008's record high.

Motorists in the UK are currently paying 119.2p per litre for diesel, according to Petrolprices.com.
