06 August, 10 A large proportion of British shoppers are worried about the potential impact that the impending increase in VAT could have on prices at the country's pumps, according to a new study. Research carried out by mystery shopping firm Retail Eyes found that one in four of those polled admitted to fears over the price of fuel in the coming months, with grocery prices also a concern. "Consumers haven't made a conscious decision yet as to whether the VAT rise will change their spending," said Retail Eyes marketing manager Simon Boydell. "There is still a lot of uncertainty among shoppers." Eight out of ten participants revealed that they would be tempted to direct their custom to retailers which do not pass the VAT hike on to consumers, while just under half anticipated it will affect their spending habits. Chancellor George Osborne announced in June's emergency Budget that the levy will be pushed up to 20 per cent from next January.
