10 August, 10 With further tax hikes planned by the government for the coming months, UK drivers have been warned not to expect any impending reductions in the cost of fuel. RAC spokesman John Franklin urged the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance to reconsider its planned hikes in fuel duty and VAT planned for October and January, but expressed little hope there will be any reversal of the coalition's position. "The future looks bleak for motorists, with rising oil prices and further tax hikes," he explained. "The coalition government [has] promised to take a look at options to control the price of petrol." Mr Franklin claimed the two 1p fuel tax increases retained in chancellor George Osborne's emergency Budget and the decision to push VAT to 20 per cent will combine to add another 5p on to the average litre of fuel in Britain. RMI Petrol warned yesterday (August 9th 2010) that the financial viability of many independent fuel retailers could be put at risk by high petrol and diesel costs.
