Business fuel card news: Haulage firms call for fuel price help

11 August, 10
British transport firms have pleaded with the coalition government to take action on fuel prices, amid fears consistently steep crude oil costs could have a knock-on effect on struggling UK businesses' diesel bills.

With VAT due to hit 20 per cent from next January and fuel duty hikes scheduled for October and January, some entrepreneurs are growing increasingly worried that their companies may be forced under if assistance is not forthcoming.

"It is one price increase after another. If we raise our charges, it's just to maintain running costs - it's not for profit," haulier Doug Mitchell told the Scottish Courier. "It's an ongoing struggle and getting about impossible."

His comments were backed by Fife Federation of Small Businesses chief Janet Torley, who pleaded with the government not to pile any further pressure on businesses struggling with the after-effects of recession.

According to Petrolprices.com, the average litre of diesel currently costs UK drivers 119.2p.
