11 August, 10 A growing proportion of British motorists are being forced to reduce the journeys they make by car due to seemingly relentless increases in the price of fuel, according to a report. An article on the This is Gloucestershire website quizzed several motorists, some of whom admitted they are seriously considering whether impending rises in petrol and diesel bills may leave them with no choice but to give their cars up altogether. "I've never bothered with the buses," electrical engineer David Cross explained. "But if the petrol price just keeps on going up and up, I'm going to have to think about it. It is getting ridiculous." IT worker Jon Clarke expressed similar concerns, suggesting that the incoming VAT and fuel tax hikes could amount to "another nail in the coffin" of British motoring. Earlier this week, a survey carried out by retailers' body RMI Petrol predicted that the cost of fuel will surpass £1.20 per litre by the August bank holiday weekend.
