12 August, 10 Energy giant BP has revealed plans to commence offshore drilling in Libyan waters this year, while rival firm Total is also preparing to create several new wells off the coast of Angola. According to AFP, BP will drill five wells in the Gulf of Sirte as part of a 2007 agreement with the Tripoli government within a matter of weeks, amid fears the hurricane season could disrupt production in the Gulf of Mexico. "We are working on the last details and we are talking now about [drilling in] the second half of the year," a spokesman for the company explained. The news provider also revealed that Total is set to commence work at the Violetta, Liro, Cravo and Orquidea fields 90 miles from the shores of the Angolan capital, Luanda, with the company anticipating reserves of some 500 million barrels.
