13 August, 10 Britain's coalition government has been urged to consider the impact fuel tax hikes are having on the country's haulage firms and look to continental Europe as an example to follow. A spokesman for insurance broker Staveley Head claimed the debate over fuel prices is unlikely to simply dissipate, with further increases in duty scheduled for October and January and VAT set to rise to 20 per cent from the start of next year. "The level of fuel duty applied in Britain, plus VAT on top, earns the government a huge revenue," the representative explained. "The predicted increases could spell the end for many in the distribution industry." He added that hauliers in other European countries are not forced to pay similarly high levels of taxation and encouraged the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance to look into ways of reducing the burden on UK drivers. According to Petrolprices.com, British motorists are currently paying on average 119.2p for a litre of diesel. Find out about the business fuel card and start saving now.
