Business fuel card news: Fuel price hikes 'will put pressure on businesses'

13 August, 10
Some British firms could be put at risk of going bust when increases in VAT and fuel duty come into effect over the coming months, one businessperson has suggested.

Speaking to the Scarborough Evening News, haulage company director Linda McLaughlin claimed many businesses have only recently adjusted to high fuel prices and the after-effects of the global economic downturn.

"It is not going to help things at all," she told the newspaper. "This is going to put a lot of pressure back on people and businesses who like us see fuel as such a big part of their outgoing cost."

Her sentiments were echoed by local Dial-a-Ride manager Julie Banks, who hinted that her organisation may be forced to increase its fees if fuel prices climb beyond their current levels.

Earlier this week, a study from fuel retailers' body RMI Petrol claimed persistently expensive crude oil trading could translate into higher costs at UK pumps.
