Fuel card news: Government urged to tackle fuel prices

17 August, 10
A group representing UK fuel retailers has called on the coalition government to reduce some of the burden on businesses and individual motorists alike by taking action to cut the cost of petrol and diesel.

According to a report in the Daily Telegraph, RMI Petrol - which represents two-thirds of the country's fuel outlets - expressed concern in a letter to prime minister David Cameron about a perceived lack of government engagement.

"Two months have passed since the announced emergency Budget. We've had the pain, but there's been no effort by government to commence discussions with industry," chairman Brian Madderson explained in the document.

He warned that current fuel prices could have a "knock-on effect" on the wider economy and potentially put the brakes on Britain's tentative emergence from the global recession.

In a report published earlier this month, RMI Petrol predicted that crude oil prices could push the cost of fuel to above 120p per litre by the August bank holiday weekend.
