17 August, 10 With petrol and diesel prices hovering at close to 120p pre litre, British motorists have been urged to take simple precautions to ensure they get the most out of a tank of fuel. In a recent article for the Newcastle Journal, Gary Beckwith acknowledged that a number of drivers are becoming increasingly concerned about the impact of fuel duty, but suggested several measures to maximise efficiency. "Millions of us are wasting petrol, oil and money because we cannot be bothered to do the simple things. In some of these cases it is even dangerous," he wrote. "We should think about the hundreds of pounds we could save." Mr Beckwith recommended regularly servicing cars to make sure they are running at the best of their capabilities and claimed planning routes beforehand can avoid racking up any unnecessary mileage. However, with further tax hikes scheduled for October and January, the debate over fuel duty looks likely to intensify further over the next few months.
