18 August, 10 The continued weakness of the British economy and the prospect of further increases in VAT and fuel duty could result in a particularly challenging period for the country's motorists, it has been claimed. Bank of England governor Mervyn King was recently forced to explain to chancellor George Osborne why inflation remains above the central bank's target rate of two per cent and high fuel prices are believed to have played a major role. Leading supermarket chain Asda warned yesterday (August 17th 2010) that families the length and breadth of the UK should brace themselves for a challenging period, with the government pressing ahead with fuel duty hikes in October and January. "These are increasingly uncertain times for millions of families across the UK," said president and chief executive Andy Clarke. "In this age of austerity, we know the pennywise will thrive."
