19 August, 10 The coalition government has claimed that it is yet to determine whether or not it will introduce a fuel duty regulator, despite a report suggesting the scheme had been scrapped. A recent article in the Daily Mirror cited sources at the Treasury as saying that chancellor George Osborne had opted to scrap the idea, which would have seen fuel tax cut when worldwide crude oil prices increased. However, with fuel prices inching towards £1.20 a litre as the August bank holiday weekend approaches, a government spokesman denied any final decision has been made and insisted further input is still to be considered. "Options for a fair fuel stabiliser will be looked at alongside the Office for Budget Responsibility's assessment of the effect of oil price fluctuations on the public finances," the representative explained. "No decision has yet been made." British motorists are currently paying an average of 119.1p for a litre of diesel, according to Petrolprices.com.
