Business fuel card news: Tax hikes 'disastrous' for hauliers

19 August, 10
Impending increases in fuel duty and VAT could have a catastrophic impact on British haulage firms when they come into effect in October and January, according to some worried entrepreneurs.

Speaking to the Galloway News, Sandie Dobie of Scottish transport company TP Niven claimed the tax hikes will be "absolutely disastrous" for the industry and warned consumers will be forced to foot the bill.

"Unfortunately, there is not much you can do about it. If it's going to happen it will," he explained. "The customer will carry the cost at the end of the day. Everything you buy is on the back of a lorry at some time or other."

His sentiments were echoed by Andrew McTaggart of fellow haulier McTaggart Bros, who described the government's plans as "worrying".

Last week, research carried out by fuel retailers' body RMI Petrol predicted a steady, steep rise in the cost of petrol and diesel over the next few months, driven largely by high crude oil prices.
