Fuel card news: Stagecoach 'to lobby over fuel duty'

20 August, 10
Transport giant Stagecoach has signalled its intention to maintain the pressure on the coalition government to provide some form of relief on fuel duty for the country's hard-pressed businesses.

Speaking to the Herald Scotland, the business's co-founder Brian Souter expressed some concern over the possible impact of the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance's austerity measures but urged a reconsideration of fuel tax.

"It's too early to have an idea about exactly what cuts the government is planning. There is talk that the refund in fuel duty might be among the cuts and we are continuing to lobby," he told the newspaper.

Mr Souter added that any increases in the amount of fuel duty paid by the company will be passed on to commuters and admitted the extra charge would be likely to hit the poor hardest.

Fuel duty hikes of 1p are due to come into effect in October and January, with a rise in VAT also scheduled for the new year.
