Business fuel card news: Haulage group urges fuel duty review

23 August, 10
A haulage industry body has urged the coalition government to reconsider the way it charges road users by restructuring the current tax system and replacing fuel duty hikes with new levies.

According to Roadtransport.com, 40 per cent of Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) members surveyed want to see congestion charging in large conurbations, while 36 per cent would prefer road charges on new motorways.

"The industry has faced successive increases in fuel duty that [do] not see the difference between commercial and personal use," CILT chief executive Steve Agg explained.

Sir Moir Lockhead, the organisation's president, admitted that the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance has work to do if it is to convince the general public to accept congestion charging, which was rejected in a Manchester referendum in 2008.

In his emergency Budget in June, chancellor George Osborne signalled his intention to press on with predecessor Alistair Darling's fuel duty increases for October and January, while also announcing a VAT rise in the new year.
