24 August, 10 The soaring price of petrol and diesel is driving a growing number of Britons to delve into their life savings simply to cover everyday costs, a new survey carried out by price comparison site moneysupermarket.com has found. According to the poll, 56 per cent of individuals quizzed admitted to being forced to dip into funds they had previously intended to stash away, with a further 26 per cent considering doing likewise due to financial worries. "Before dipping into savings, it's worth exploring other options," said the website's Clare Francis. "Spending wisely, using discount vouchers and focusing on repaying any outstanding debts will all stand consumers in good stead." Fuel bills have also contributed to increased inflation in the cost of food over the last few months, with meat, vegetables and fruit all becoming increasingly expensive. Figures from Petrolprices.com show that British motorists are currently paying an average of 118.3p per litre for diesel, with unleaded costing 116p.
