24 August, 10 Britain's most remote communities are being hardest hit by current levels of fuel taxation and the coalition government urgently needs to take action to ease the burden, according to one politician. In an opinion piece for the Inverness Courier, Inverness East and Nairn MSP Fergus Ewing claimed drivers in northern Scotland are paying as much as 15p per litre more than their counterparts in the large urban conurbations. "[The government has] promised there will be 'a pilot' of a rural or island fuel reduction scheme," he observed. "We know neither where nor when, by what means, nor if the pilot would become a full-blown policy for all the areas disadvantaged." Mr Ewing called on the Conservative-Liberal Democrat alliance to defer tax-altering powers to the Scottish parliament at Holyrood if it is not prepared to take action to reduce fuel duty. In June, chancellor George Osborne signalled his intention to introduce fuel tax and VAT hikes in October and January. Improve the efficiency of your business and your fleet with the Esso fuel card.
