25 August, 10 Britain's farming industry is under severe threat from the soaring cost of fuel and some agricultural workers could be driven out of the sector unless the situation improves, it has been suggested. In a statement, leaders from the National Farmers' Union (NFU) claimed the price of fuel has combined with a range of other factors to force farmers' overheads upwards and warned that a difficult winter could be in store. "The drought in Russia and reduced harvest yields in other parts of Europe is already having a major impact on the price of grain, while fuel prices also remain very high," said the NFU. "It's clear that the UK consumer wants to buy UK beef." Beef farming has endured difficult conditions over the last two years in the wake of the global economic slump. Earlier this month, research from fuel retailers' body RMI Petrol predicted the price of petrol and diesel will rise by eight per cent by the early part of next year.
