31 August, 10 Long-suffering British motorists are still worried about the impact the soaring cost of fuel could have on their day-to-day business, according to a new report published by research firm GfK NOP. Although the group's general consumer confidence rose by four points this month, its studies also uncovered considerable concern over the "climate for major purchases" - in which category sentiment among UK shoppers dropped by four points to -20. "Households already face high unemployment, muted earnings growth, elevated debt levels, high fuel prices and tight credit conditions. A muted housing market is also not good news," said IHS Global Insight analyst Howard Archer. GfK NOP's Nick Moon claimed the news could come as something of a relief to the coalition government, following four consecutive months of falls in British consumer confidence. Earlier this month, fuel retailers' body RMI Petrol warned that sharp increases in petrol and diesel prices may be on the way, with the cost of fuel climbing by eight per cent into 2011.
