02 September, 10 A European energy watchdog has urged continental lawmakers to introduce additional fuel taxes to help pay for the damage caused by climate change, according to one media source. An article in the Daily Express has claimed that a new report from consultancy organisation AEA and commissioned by the European Union recommended the introduction of "aggressive policy measures" to reduce carbon emissions. "The costs of pollution and congestion are already more than covered by taxation on motorists in this country," said Peter Roberts of the Drivers' Alliance. "This call for more fuel taxes and road pricing smacks of a cultural dislike of personal transport." British drivers are among the most taxed in Europe, with just £8 billion of the government's annual £45 billion transport duty revenue being reinvested in the country's road network. Petrol and diesel prices breached the 120p per litre barrier earlier this year and fuel retailers' body RMI Petrol suggested last month that fuel costs could rise by eight per cent next year.
