07 September, 10 Energy secretary Chris Huhne has warned that Britain's motorists and shoppers could bear the brunt of any further taxes imposed to reduce the country's carbon emissions. According to BusinessGreen.com, the Liberal Democrat minister suggested in a recent interview with the Sunday Times that fuel duty is just one of the options available to the coalition government if it decides to increase levies. "The government is absolutely up for a shift from taxation on general matters to things that pollute the environment," he explained. "In the end, though taxes may fall to business, it's consumers who will end up paying." Mr Huhne added that any hikes in taxation will be at least partly offset by incentive schemes aimed at persuading individuals to lower the amount of energy they use, but stressed the government's commitment to cutting Britain's use of fossil fuels. Fuel duty is already scheduled to rise in October and January, with VAT also due to climb to 20 per cent in the new year. Find out about the Esso fuel card and start saving now.
