08 September, 10 A Denbighshire haulier has claimed that Britain's transport industry is under severe pressure from soaring fuel prices and called on the coalition government to do more to reduce some of the burden. Speaking to the North Wales Daily Post, LE Jones operations manager David Hughes revealed that his company's fuel costs have risen to 40 per cent of turnover from around one-third at the time of the refinery blockades ten years ago. "It is very hard and the whole industry needs help," he explained. "We cannot compete on cost with foreign trucks that can fill up on the continent for considerably less than we are paying. This makes life difficult." The cost of crude oil was around $27 per barrel in 2000 and has increased markedly in the following years, fluctuating between $70 and over $80 for most of 2010. Last week, energy secretary Chris Huhne suggested in an interview with the Sunday Times that further fuel tax hikes could be on the way in an effort to reduce carbon emissions.
