Fuel card news: Fuel prices 'forcing redundancies'

09 September, 10
Some British transport firms are being forced to consider making staff redundant due to persistently high fuel prices, one Bristol haulier has claimed.

Speaking to BBC Bristol, businessman Andy Hardwell revealed he has had to introduce a raft of new measures over recent months to lessen the impact of rocketing diesel costs, but may be left with no alternative but to lay workers off.

"I've had to diversify in quite a few ways, like [using] smaller vehicles and [cutting] jobs," he told the news provider. "And I'm now very seriously considering losing a couple of people that I have got."

Mr Hardwell suggested that smaller companies are at particular risk from sky-high fuel bills and expressed disappointment that successive governments have so far failed to take decisive action to reduce the burden.

Drivers are currently paying an average of 117.8p for a litre of diesel at UK forecourts, according to Petrolprices.com.
