Fuel card news: Campaigners head for Downing Street

12 July, 11
FairFuelUK campaigners have personally delivered a letter declaring their opposition against current fuel duty rates to the prime minister at 10 Downing Street.

The group - which included representatives from the Road Haulage Association and Freight Transport Association (FTA) - was led by Harlow MP Robert Halfon earlier today (July 12th).

Members want to see plans to raise fuel tax in January 2012 abolished and are also searching for an explanation as to why diesel prices have not declined at the same rate as crude oil.

In the letter, Mr Halfon highlighted the unfair nature of the high levies, as more foreign haulage firms are expanding their operations in the UK at the expense of local companies because they pay far less for their fuel on the continent.

FTA chief executive Theo de Pencier said: "Today has been about bringing the critical issue of rising fuel prices to the very heart of government."

Recent statistics released by the AA showed that fuel sales were down by one billion litres in the first three months of 2011 compared to the same period in 2010.
