09 August, 11 An MP who is leading calls for the government to cut fuel duty has told those who want people to ditch their cars in favour of public transport to "get in the real world". Robert Halfon has suggested that many residents in the UK are dependent on their vehicles and these motorists are currently being blighted by unfair diesel rates. He added that Britain is a "great car economy" and has urged the coalition to scrap the proposed 4p per litre tax hikes scheduled for January 2012. Mr Halfon also called for the matter to be discussed at length in Parliament, something that may happen soon, as a petition set up by FairFuelUK asking for cheaper fuel has already amassed 18,000 signatures after just a few days. "The question is not can you afford to have a car - but can you afford not to," he remarked. This comes after an RAC Foundation report showed the duty claimed by the UK government on diesel purchases is among the highest seen in the whole of Europe.
