04 October, 11 A debate surrounding the high cost of fuel will be held in the House of Commons, after a petition amassed 100,000 signatures. The e-petition was set up by campaign group FairFuel UK and it specifically called for planned increases to fuel duty in 2012 to be scrapped. It is only the third document to pass the 100,000 threshold needed to force a Parliamentary discussion - the others being related to the recent UK riots and the release of Cabinet papers containing information on the Hillsborough disaster. Tory MP Robert Halfon was involved in the fuel duty campaign and suggested the number of signatures indicates the strength of feeling about spiralling prices. "Rip-off petrol and diesel prices are now so high they are a poverty trap, keeping people on benefits as jobseekers can't afford to travel," he commented. The Freight Transport Association recently stated that the UK haulage sector has had to shell out an extra £1.3 billion in the past 12 months thanks to the rising cost of diesel.
